Bellahouston Academy brings MAMMA MIA! to Glasgow’s Southside for its biggest school show yet
Bellahouston Academy is bringing MAMMA MIA! to Glasgow’s Southside in June 2027, following the musical’s first-ever release for performance by schools and university groups across the UK and Ireland.
Twenty-seven years after its West End premiere, pupils will finally have the opportunity to perform a show they have been requesting at the school for years.
Running from 15 to 17 June 2027, the production follows sold-out performances of Grease and Back to the 80’s. With school shows involving more than 120 cast and crew members year after year, Bellahouston is preparing for its biggest production yet, extending the run to three nights to welcome even more audience members.
Niall Hunter, Faculty Head of Expressive Arts said:
“Every year, when we start talking about the next school show, pupils ask: ‘Can we do MAMMA MIA!?’ For years, we have had to explain that it simply wasn’t available to us. Being able to finally say yes is incredibly exciting.
“Our productions of Grease and Back to the 80’s sold out, and we regularly have more than 120 young people in our cast and crew. There is a real appetite for performing here, matched by fantastic support from our families and school community. With a title like MAMMA MIA!, we are expecting this to be huge.
“We are bringing one of the world’s best-loved musicals to Glasgow’s Southside, with our young people at the heart of it. We want families, former pupils and our neighbours to join us for what promises to be our biggest school show yet.”
Set on a Greek island on the eve of a wedding, MAMMA MIA! follows a daughter’s search for her father, bringing three men from her mother’s past back into her life. ABBA favourites including Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and The Winner Takes It All help tell a story of family, friendship and love.
Niall Hunter continues: “There is something particularly exciting about working on a show that pupils have wanted to do for so long. They already know and love so much of the music. Now they get to explore the characters, comedy and relationships that bring the story to life.
“Our school shows bring together pupils from different year groups, with different experiences and levels of confidence. Watching them become a company, support each other and achieve something together is one of the most rewarding parts of the process. MAMMA MIA! gives us a fantastic opportunity to build on that.”
As with every Bellahouston school show, opportunities extend well beyond the stage. Pupils contribute through set design and construction, lighting, sound, stage management, props, costumes, front of house, marketing and promotion, choreography, assistant directing and playing in the band. This established approach gives everyone a way to take part, with leadership roles for pupils ready to take on greater responsibility.
Local businesses will have opportunities to support the production through sponsorship and donations, helping create an ambitious arts experience for young people in Glasgow’s Southside.
MAMMA MIA! runs at Bellahouston Academy, 30 Gower Terrace, Glasgow, from 15 to 17 June 2027.
